- Setting out from the cooking zone and the sightline from the room, so cuts fall where they are least noticed.
- Outlet and switch positions accounted for in the layout before the first tile is set.
- Junctions to counter and cabinet sealed as movement joints rather than grouted rigid.
- Edge treatment chosen and agreed - trim, miter or exposed edge - because it is a visible decision, not a default.
If existing conditions require it
Updating a backsplash around existing cabinets
A backsplash update can be planned around cabinets and countertops you intend to keep. Identify the surfaces staying in place, the tile area to change and any exposed ends or windows where the new finish needs to stop.
Removing existing tile can reveal wall repairs that need to be included in preparation. Tile size, layout and edge treatment affect the work around outlets, corners and cabinet edges. Changes involving regulated electrical work need the appropriate specialist.
If you are also replacing countertops or changing cabinets, discuss the sequence before finalizing the backsplash. Confirm tile and trim selections and purchasing responsibilities in the estimate rather than assuming all finishing pieces come with the tile.

- Outlet and switch positions may need adjusting to suit a tile layout; that is coordinated with the appropriate specialist.
- A backsplash cannot correct a countertop that is out of level.
- Electrical alteration to relocate outlets is not part of this work and is coordinated with the trade licensed for it.
- Tile is not set over a substrate that is unsound behind a counter, where a later failure means removing the counter to reach it.
