Work we can discuss

These are the kinds of work to discuss. Your written estimate confirms what is included for your home.

Typical scope

  • Trim, casing and molding installation
  • Scribing to walls and floors that are out of true
  • Miters, returns and joints
  • Filling, sanding and preparation for paint
  • Reading the room’s deviations first, since finish carpentry absorbs the building’s inaccuracy rather than repeating it.
  • Material selected and conditioned for the room before it is cut.
  • Joints cut and fitted for movement, because a joint that is perfect on the day opens with the first heating season.
  • Fixing into structure, set and filled ready for the intended finish.
  • Terminations and returns detailed rather than left as a cut end.
  • Preparation to the standard the finish requires, since paint magnifies what stain conceals and stain conceals nothing.

If existing conditions require it

  • Matching an existing profile

What to know before work begins

Plumbing, electrical, gas and HVACWhen a project includes work that requires a licensed trade, the appropriate specialist is engaged for that part of the scope.

Other limits

  • Old profiles are frequently no longer manufactured. Where a match is not available we will show you the closest option before ordering.
  • Finish carpentry cannot conceal a wall that is significantly out of plumb; that is a separate decision.
  • Finish carpentry does not straighten the building. Where a deviation is large enough to show, it is pointed out before the work so the approach can be agreed.
  • Where the substrate will not take a sound fixing, the work is not carried out until it will.

Do you provide materials?

Who supplies each material is agreed for the project and recorded in the written estimate. We confirm purchasing responsibilities before work begins.

Do I need photos to request an estimate?

No. Photos are optional, but they can help us understand the existing condition.
