Baseboards do not always have to come off before luxury vinyl plank flooring is installed, but leaving them in place changes how the perimeter must be finished. The right choice depends on the condition and height of the existing trim, the required space around the floor, the room’s wall lines, and the look you want at the end.

This decision should be made before flooring materials are ordered or old flooring is removed. Baseboards, door casings, transitions, wall paint, and finished floor height all meet at the room’s edges. Planning them together avoids a floor that looks complete in the center but improvised around the perimeter.

Understand the three common finish approaches

The first approach is to remove the existing baseboards, install the LVP to the planned perimeter, and reinstall or replace the trim over the finished floor edge. This can create a clean built-in appearance and avoids adding a second small molding. It also makes sense when the baseboards are worn, heavily painted, incomplete, or too short for the new floor height.

The second approach is to keep the baseboards and add shoe molding or quarter round after the floor is installed. This can reduce disturbance to walls and older trim, but it adds another visible profile around the room. The third approach is to keep some trim and replace other sections where conditions differ. A mixed plan can work, but the transitions between finish methods need to be deliberate.

Start with the flooring system requirements

Many LVP products are installed as floating floors and need a clear perimeter space so the floor can move as one field. Use the current instructions for the selected product to establish that space and any transition requirements. Do not assume that the same detail applies to every plank system, underlayment, room size, or adjoining floor.

The finish trim should cover the planned perimeter without fastening through the floating floor. Measure how much horizontal coverage the existing baseboard, replacement baseboard, or added shoe molding will provide. A narrow profile may not hide an uneven wall line, while an oversized profile can look heavy in a small room.

Evaluate the existing baseboards before deciding

Look at the baseboards as finish carpentry, not just as something beside the floor. Note split sections, open joints, missing returns, heavy paint buildup, loose fasteners, and areas that no longer follow the wall. Compare the profile and height around the whole room, including behind doors, inside closets, and beside built-ins.

Sound, distinctive trim may be worth preserving, especially in an older Rochester-area home where the baseboard profile belongs with door and window casings. Plain trim with many earlier repairs may be easier to replace while the room is already open. Photograph unusual joints and label reusable sections before removal so they can return to the correct locations.

Check how much finished height will change

The new floor assembly may sit higher or lower than the surface it replaces. That change affects how much baseboard remains visible, whether old paint lines will show, and how the room meets door casings, thresholds, cabinets, and fixed features. Record the existing surface, material being removed, underlayment, plank thickness, and planned preparation layer.

If old carpet and pad are replaced with a thinner hard surface, the bottom of the baseboard may sit noticeably above the LVP. Shoe molding can cover some gaps, but it should not be used to disguise a large, irregular opening. If the new assembly is higher, part of an older baseboard profile may disappear or the trim may feel compressed against nearby casing blocks.

Compare removing trim with adding shoe molding

Removing baseboards allows the flooring edge and wall line to be finished as one detail. It also creates access for wall-edge repairs and lets the installer reset trim at a consistent height. The tradeoff is that removal can reveal old caulk lines, paint ridges, fastener holes, and fragile wall edges that need preparation before the baseboard goes back.

Keeping baseboards reduces that disturbance. Added shoe molding follows the floor more closely than a tall baseboard and can hide modest variation at the edge. However, it changes the room’s visual language. Shoe molding should turn corners cleanly, end neatly at door casings, and relate to the color and finish of the baseboard or floor. It should look intentional, not like an afterthought.

Plan door casings and jambs at the same time

Door openings often require more attention than straight walls. The plank field must pass through or stop at the opening, while the casing and jamb meet the new finished height. Compare each doorway because adjoining rooms may have different flooring, underlayment, or transition profiles. One detail may not work for every opening in the project.

A clean plan usually lets the flooring fit beneath the appropriate casing edge rather than leaving a visible irregular notch around it. Check for casing blocks, narrow returns, split jambs, and earlier flooring layers hidden below the trim. If casing repair or replacement is needed, coordinate it with baseboard work so the profiles and paint lines meet correctly.

Account for walls that are not perfectly straight

Older walls can bow slightly, and baseboards may bridge those variations. Once the old floor is removed, the exposed perimeter can show wider and narrower spaces along the same wall. A finish profile needs enough coverage for the real wall line while still maintaining the floor system’s planned edge.

Use a straightedge and tape to map obvious variations before installation. Pay special attention behind radiators, around chimney projections, beside stair trim, and at small wall returns. These locations often need a specific piece of trim or a change in direction. Resolving them on paper first produces cleaner cuts and fewer improvised joints.

Include wall and paint work in the sequence

Baseboard removal can expose an unpainted strip, old caulk, torn wall paper, or a different wall texture. If the trim will be reset at a new height, that line may remain visible. Decide whether the wall needs localized preparation or a broader finish coat before the flooring and trim sequence is finalized.

When baseboards are being painted, much of the preparation is easier before final installation. The last coat and touch-up plan should still account for fastener filling, corner joints, and the meeting line at the wall. Protect the new LVP during finish work and avoid building a thick paint bridge that makes future trim changes difficult.

Decide whether to reuse or replace the baseboards

Reuse works best when the profile is worth keeping, pieces can be removed in usable lengths, and there is enough material to complete corners and returns. Replacement is often more practical when large sections are missing, joints are weak, the new floor height changes the proportions, or the homeowner wants a simpler consistent profile.

If only one wall needs new trim, compare the profiles closely before assuming a match exists. Small differences in thickness, top shape, and edge radius become visible at a joint. Sometimes the cleaner result is to replace one complete room or one clearly defined section rather than creating several near-matches.

Plan transitions before finishing the perimeter

A doorway transition, hearth edge, cabinet toe-kick, or change to tile may determine where the first rows of LVP should land. Review these fixed points before choosing the baseboard method. The floor layout, transition position, and perimeter trim should support one another rather than being solved separately at the end.

For connected rooms, decide whether the LVP will continue as one field or stop at a defined transition. That decision affects plank direction, doorway cuts, and the order in which trim returns are completed. A clear transition plan also helps avoid very narrow plank pieces along the most visible wall.

Use a simple decision checklist

Remove and reset or replace baseboards when the existing trim needs repair, the floor height will expose awkward gaps, the homeowner wants a clean profile without added molding, or wall-edge work is already part of the project. Keep the baseboards and add a smaller molding when the trim is sound, wall disturbance should be limited, and the added profile fits the room.

Before work begins, record the room dimensions, chosen LVP product, underlayment, existing floor layers, baseboard profile, doorway details, adjoining floors, and desired paint finish. Include photos of corners, closets, transitions, and unusual wall returns. Those details define a more accurate flooring and finish-carpentry scope.

Treat the room edge as part of the flooring project

The best baseboard decision is the one that supports the selected floor system and looks consistent with the room. It should account for the real wall line, finished floor height, door casings, transitions, and paint work before installation starts. The choice is less about a universal rule and more about coordinating all of the surfaces that meet at the perimeter.
