Macedon’s Building and Zoning Department handles permit and zoning questions. The town designates land within one-fifth mile of the Erie/Barge Canal as the Canal Corridor Overlay District. The code applies added site-development provisions and directs the Planning Board to consider historic character, topography, vegetation, and other environmental conditions. The overlay code also requires added environmental documentation for site plans. It contains canal-specific setback and buffer provisions. The Planning Board can make certain project-specific determinations. The official zoning map shows the mapped corridor. For an addition or exterior project near the canal, confirm the overlay before fixing the footprint. Avoid quoting a single setback without a parcel review. The code contains multiple provisions whose application depends on the proposal.
